You can walk into a store and make an appointment, they take your phone away for a couple of hours and charge (here in Mexico City) 30 dollars. I was told by apple reps I shouldn’t change my battery until the bettery health meter read 80%

No battery, but had the glass replaced. Made appointment online at Apple Store. Dropped phone off, came back a couple of hours later. Minimal waiting.

Had another screen replaced at a mall kiosk on a phone that eventually died. Apple guy said that the death of the phone is likely related to the non-Apple screen repair. BS? Maybe. But the kiosk-bought screen was not as responsive as the original, and the screen I got replaced by Apple was perfect.

My sister had her’s replaced and much to her dismay they actually fixed it there and then in the store as opposed to replacing it.

I had mine replaced.  I scheduled online with Apple, and they said I’d get a call when my battery arrived at the local Apple store.  A few weeks later, I got the call, made an appointment for the following day.  Massive line of people waiting as the store opened, but I got a spot near the front of the queue after the doors open and dropped off my phone.  It was ready about five hours later and has been working like new since.

I had my wife’s replaced at a third party repair place. It hasn’t been holding a charge very well. I should deal with that.

DIY. Takes all of 5 minutes and will cost less than $20.

If you don’t want to do it, send it to me and I’ll do it for the cost of parts (like $10?) and shipping both ways (probably no more than $10) . I find repairing iPhones fun so I’d never actually charge to do it. :)

Mine’s a 5S, made an appointment online but the battery swelling had damaged the phone. Ended up with a replacement (probably refurbished) 5S for $79.

I second (third?) the DIY suggestion. It’s an easy repair. I did it on my phone and my daughter’s phone.

Sound advice from the reps considering the battery replacement is done for free at under 80% health.

Yeah. Better to avoid breaking the screen, in my experience. Are you going to try applying one of those tempered glass screen protectors?

How much did the new Apple screen cost?

I think anytime you open a phone, it’s bad.

Yes, but I don’t think it’s because of being a third party battery.  I never pay for apple store repairs after warranty.  Too expensive.

Apple replaces batteries for $29 I can’t imagine 3rd party is that much cheaper for an OEM battery.

I’ll check it out.  We were having the screen replaced at the same time, and that was definitely quoted much higher by apple.

I set the appointment through my Apple Store app at the nearest Apple Store, brought it in, waited in the area for a little while (Less than 15 min, if memory serves) , then left with my phone with a new battery.

They have this whole process down.

With tax, the screen replacement on my wife’s 7 plus was $185.90.

But the real screens are better than the cheaper aftermarket ones, so it might be worth it if you’re keeping it a while.

I don’t discount what you say, but in this case, she can’t distinguish the performance from the original.

The only laptop I ever bought new was a MacBook Pro and I traded it for a camera. I tried the Windows thing, but no joy. Just not a Mac guy.

That sounds like a good deal. I believe my wife’s phone is a 5S, but i want to give her my daughter’s 6 when she buys an 8, but I want to get the battery because of that performance conspiracy.

I’d not be afraid to take on that project, but the phone is too new and still too valuable.

My computer gave up on me because of a shoddy repair at the apple store itself over a Known Bad Board; meaning they had to replace something like 1,500 dollars worth of parts for free, but they screwed up an electrical connection that killed my SSD and my display. I gave the computer to the office’s tech guru and he fixed it, in the process I asked him if he could spare a windows install upon my laptop in order to be able to install Autodesk Invetor.

It’s running up on five years now, and it still runs like a charm, despite some bad stuff.

You mean how Apple confirmed they were throttling performance on iPhone 6 with older batteries?

Don’t do it yourself if Apple will do it. While Apple will replace aftermarket screens and do other repairs, if you have a non-Apple battery then they’ll blame any issues on it (including a broken screen repair. “No it bricked after we changed the screen because it was a non-Apple battery inside”) So they don’t do anything but close the phone back up if they see a non-Apple battery inside. The $10-20 price difference isn’t worth the potential future headaches if you live where there are Apple stores.

( I live in Japan where the nearest authorized repair place doesn’t deal with older Apple USA phones because there are some slight differences to Japanese ones, and when my wife broke her screen in the USA and tried to have Apple repair it they took the phone told her to come back in 3 hours, and when she returned they gave her back her phone with the broken screen because they found a non-Apple battery since I had to DIY because I can’t have it done here.)

You are really fast if you can get that damn tape out from under the battery in less than 5 minutes. I need a couple minutes to fish out the unbroken part of at least one strip every time . A dmittedly, I’ve only done it twice, but that clearly makes me an expert, right. ;) I suppose practice helps (maybe having fingernails is beneficial as well)

Also, the Apply store thing with my wife was less than 2 months ago. So it’s a fairly current take on things.

How recently did that happen to you?

When my 5S was less than 2 years old, ( but out of warranty) the battery swelled, the Apple Genius looked at the phone, declared it back in warranty as that should never happen, and gave me a refurbished 5S for free. So I’m curious if they just decided that those are so old now that it’s reasonable for that sort of thing to happen?

Kinja'd!!! Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo > AdverseMartyr

Interesting. There were the performance issues that Apple intentionally caused with the older batteries and we want to replace for that reason.

Yeah, it was probably about a year ago, because my first 5s hung on for a long time. I think there was something to do with the serial number to determine whether your replacement phone  was free or the price of a battery replacement.

I see, when it happened with mine the guy was, “This is an issue we haven’t seen. We’re sending your phone off for them to take a look at why that happened. That shouldn’t happen. Here’s your new to you phone.”
I guess its better to be on the leading edge of that sort of problem (as long as it doesn’t go BOOM.)
